Swedish National Championship Week in Skaraborg 2027

The 2027 Winter Swedish National Championship Week will take place in Skövde, Skaraborg, from 3 to 7 February 2027. It is the second time that Skövde has been given the opportunity to host the event, and just like last time, it will offer a wide range of sporting and cultural activities for all ages.

"The National Championship Week is so much more than what is shown on TV! We want an event that has something for everyone, a public celebration with plenty of activities. We want to engage the residents of Skövde so that they feel involved, committed, and proud of their city. The 2023 National Championship Week was fantastic, and now we want to make 2027 even better," says Lotta Stigsdotter.

Lotta Stigsdotter is employed by Next Skövde as a destination development manager for Billingen, one of the venues hosting activities during the Swedish National Championship Week.

Billingen is also Skövde’s major arena for cycling, hiking, cross-country skiing, orienteering, and several other sports and outdoor activities.

Atop Billingen, competitions will be held in four of the sports featured during the Championship Week: cross-country skiing, para cross-country skiing, snowbike, and sled dog racing.

"I’m a cross-country skier myself and am really looking forward to those competitions, but at the same time it’s incredibly exciting to watch the sled dogs. They reach amazing speeds! And in the snowbike event, competitors ride bicycles down our alpine ski slope. That can’t be anything but spectacular to watch!" she says.

Goal: Increasing Interest in Sports

The Swedish National Championship Week is organized by the Swedish Sports Confederation, with the aim of increasing interest in the sports movement and raising the profile of national championship competitions.

In addition to being open for everyone to experience on site, the competitions are also broadcast on SVT, Swedish National Television.

For those curious about experiencing the event in Skövde, competitions will take place across four venues and feature as many as 22 different sports. In addition, there will be a wide range of cultural events and try-it activities alongside the competitions themselves, offering everything from arm wrestling and dance to bowling and e-cycling.

Working to lower barriers and invite people to outdoor recreation and sporting events has become something of a hallmark for the Billingen Outdoor Recreation Area. Over the past eight years, it has undergone a transformation from a somewhat neglected recreational area into a destination that now boasts everything from pump tracks and a covered ice rink to extensive cross-country ski trails, hiking trails, and cycling routes.

"Billingen should be both a destination for visitors who travel here and the natural choice for families and residents of Skövde and the wider Skaraborg region. We focus on offering a broad range of activities, many with a focus on children, to inspire a love of movement and outdoor life."

In addition to significant investments made by the municipality in the area, the large Billingehus hotel, which overlooks the whole of Skövde, has undergone extensive renovations and expansions in recent years, transforming it into an impressive spa hotel. Today, Billingen can proudly offer a facility of the highest standard.

Lotta is one of those who has been part of the entire journey.

"Billingen has undergone an incredible transformation over the past eight years since we inaugurated the new artificial snow trails! A tremendous amount of work has gone into it, but now that we can host major events, such as the Swedish National Championship Week, it is clear that the investment has paid off. And it does not stop here. Ahead of the Championship Week this winter, the stadium will be expanded and widened, where we will host the finish area for the cross-country skiing events. It is an improvement that will remain long after the event is over. There is always something that can be made even better," Lotta says with a laugh.
